Lament Of The Lost - Chapter IV

Ahngrim awoke some 3 hours after his brutal encounter with the beast. The weird thing was that his life was spared; the beast had shown mercy to him. Ahngrim awoken as the piercing rays of light found their way into his squinting eyes. Dazed and confused, he turned to his side and tried to see if Agares was around. It was the only thing that came to his mind. Instead, Ahngrim saw a figure squatting at a distance. The figure suddenly stood up and started walking towards him. From the distance, Ahngrim could fathom a petite figure, with curves at the right places. As the figure got into a visible view, Ahngrim realized that the figure was actually a woman.

“Oh you’re finally up! Don’t mind me for being a busybody but please let me tend to your wounds.”  The woman said while ransacking her backpack.

“Sorry I forgot to introduce myself, you can call me Kaitlin.” She said with a shy smile on her face.

Kaitlin’s slender figure was promoted by her tight uniform; it appeared to Ahngrim that she could be a soldier of Earthrealm. She was slightly fair in appearance and had medium length hair which was dyed with streaks of brown. The most distinctive feature that caught Ahngrim’s eye was her smile and dimples.

“Thank you for your kindness but I must make my move now, I need to find him.” Ahngrim said with a firm voice as he used his blade to leverage himself up onto his feet.

“Please wait! Mister, you are still injured! At least tell me your name” Kaitlin begged as she picked up the bandages lying on the damp floor and rushed towards Ahngrim’s side.

“Name’s Ahngrim, trouble follows me with every step.”

Both Ahngrim and Kaitlin then ventured towards the light at the end of the tunnel, with Kaitlin at the back trying to catch up with the determined Ahngrim.

Dawn broke at last; Zephrius would get up early as usual. However today, he felt that something was amiss. With the straightening of his robe and some minor adjustments, he slowly paced to Ahngrim’s house. With a slight clout from his hand, the door unraveled.

“Hmm, where might that child be…?” He thought to himself as he glanced at the mess scattered throughout the hard granite interior of Ahngrim’s house.

Zephrius didn’t bring any weaponry with him, his two hands were just enough. After all, it was he and his master who first entered and inhabited Oblivion Mountain. He knew the tunnel like the back of his palm. He took his time to stroll through the tunnel, scrutinizing every detail in the spick and span. The piercing sun shone through the top of the tunnel, providing a pathway.

“Bullet shells? Sign of a battle I see…”

He continued moving on, with a worried look on his face. The sparkle of Sciilatia’s imbued jewels immediately caught the old man’s attention. He paced up, accelerating with each step. Zephrius had already drawn out a picture in his mind; he had come to a consensus of what had gone wrong. The blood trails on the floor were another tell-tale sign of a cat and mouse game from hell. It wasn’t long until Zephrius had figured that something had terribly gone wrong. He feared for the worst, he feared that his secret plan might be foiled and exposed.

Ahngrim felt uneasy without Sciilatia, it had always been there for him all this while. He was armed with only a dagger and a blade which he salvaged from Agares’s Gun-Blade. On the other hand, Kaitlin had a baton and a pistol stashed in her belt. The harsh winters weren’t kind to Ahngrim and Kaitlin, Ahngrim had begun to feel the chill, after all he wore only a tunic and some army pants. The conditions atop the mountain were much forgiving; it was about a good 20 Degrees Celsius difference.

“Look woman, you can stop following me already. I’m alright. Gah, where could he be…?” Ahngrim rubbed both his palms together to fight the cold while telling Kaitlin; thoughts of Agares were still fleeting through his mind at this point.

“We’re on the same route anyway. I have to head over to Ferox’s Post north of here to deliver some documents, I think that’s the only place your friend could have went to. Be glad that you have the company of a beautiful girl like me!” She giggled to herself while trying to maintain a smile on her face.

The shelter of the tunnel had provided them with unimaginable warmth, like that of a mother’s embrace. However, they were now left out cold in the white forest, they had to endure and keep moving north until reaching the icy plains or just head back to the tunnel to wait for this endless waltz of snowing to stop.

In the midst of the heavy snow and winds, Ahngrim saw the silhouette of familiar figure.

“Looking for this?” The hazy figure shouted in a deep and menacing voice.

“Agares! Is that you?” Ahngrim stumbled upon his own words as his heart raced with uncertain fear.
